PANTRY PESTS

Pantry pests are usually brought into the home/business in an infested package of food. Initially, infestations are easy to overlook, because the insects involved are quite small, especially in the egg and larval stages. Often the first indication of an infestation is small moths flying about or beetles in or near a package of food. Insects found in flour and cereal are often referred to as weevils; however, the most common insect pantry pest in New York & New jersey is the Indian Meal Moth..

PANTRY PEST IDENTIFICATION

The most common insects infesting food are in the orders Moths (Lepidoptera) and Beetles (Coleoptera). Adult moths and adult beetles are easy to distinguish from one another, but their similar-looking larvae are a little more difficult to identify. Use a hand lens to examine the legs of the larvae. Beetle larvae are either grublike and legless or have only three pairs of legs, all located close to the head. Moth larvae have three pairs of true legs plus additional leglike structures farther down the abdomen. Both larvae and adults of beetles feed on foodstuffs, whereas only the larval stage of moths eats stored products.

DRUGSTORE BEETLE

The drugstore beetle gets its name by feeding on pharmaceutical drugs. Today, it still feeds on drugs but also, many dry stored products such as cereal, breads, cookies, chocolates, sweets, seeds, grains, pet foods, spices, red pepper, flour, almost any food that they can find. Adult drugstore beetles are very active and can be identified by their rapid skittering movement. The beetles are about one-tenth inch long, light brown to red brown, cylindrical, and have humpbacks. Their bodies are covered with fine, silky pubescence, and they have distinct grooves in their wing covers. Drugstore beetles have antenna that end in three enlarged segments

CONFUSED FLOUR BEETLE

The confused flour beetle and the red flour beetle are very similar in appearance and can be most easily distinguished by examining the antennae; the antennae of the red flour beetle end abruptly in a three-segmented club, while the confused flour beetle's antennae gradually enlarge toward the tip, ending in a four-segmented club. Adult beetles of these two species have shiny reddish-brown bodies that are about 1/7 inch long, flattened, and oval. These beetles have a very wide food range including cereals, damaged grains, grain products, shelled nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, drugs, and herbarium and museum specimens. Confused flour beetle cannot fly.

RED FLOUR BEETLE

Red flour beetles attack stored grain products such as flour, cereals, meal, crackers, beans, spices, pasta, cake mix, dried pet food, dried flowers, chocolate, nuts, seeds, and even dried museum specimens. Flour beetles have two small antennae, and the appearance of the antennae is one of the main ways to distinguish the type of Flour Beetle you are dealing with. Flour Beetles have small wings and while the red flour beetle can fly, the confused flour beetle cannot. This important difference makes the red flour beetle much more capable of widespread infestation.

SAWTOOTHED GRAIN BEETLE

Adult Sawtoothed grain beetles are slender insects about 1/8 inches long. The usually live for 6 to 10 months, but some may live as long as 3 years. Females lay between 45 to 275 eggs among foodstuffs or on grain kernels. The small, slender, white eggs hatch in 3 to 5 days. Emerging larvae crawl about while feeding. During the summer, the developmental period from egg to adult is about 4 weeks. These insects can infest grain products at any point from the farm storage bin to the warehouse where the finished product is stored, as well as in your own cupboard.

CIGARETTE BEETLE

The cigarette beetle feeds on cured tobacco, cigarettes, and cigars. It also feeds on dried herbs, spices, nuts, cereals and cereal products, dried fruit, seeds, and animal products such as dried fish and meats, hair, and wool. In the home this beetle is most commonly found in pet foods, cereals, nuts, and candy. It may also infest dried pepper arrangements, wreaths, and spices such as chili powder or paprika.

RICE WEEVIL

Rice weevils are a species of stored product pest that are found living throughout the world; in the United States they are mainly found in southern states that have warmer climates. They are named because when first discovered they were mainly associated with whole grain rice. Rice weevils are small; adults only grow to only be about 1/10 of an inch in length. They are reddish-brown to black with four yellow or reddish spots on the corners of the forewings, and many round pits on the thorax. Rice weevils are winged and capable of flight. They also have a distinctive “snout” that is 1/3 of its total body length.

INDIAN MEAL MOTHS

Indian meal moths are small winged pests that are multi-colored but primarily a pale grey color. They typically reside and reproduce indoors, primarily within food packaging in kitchens, stores selling food and industrial food processing plants. They are known to cause severe damage to food, spoiling it as it becomes infested. Indian meal moths are reported as pests in households, grocery stores and food processing companies all over the world.

When they make their way into kitchens, they set up shop in cupboards and pantries. Indian meal moths work their way into cracker and cereal boxes, bread bins, flour containers and other dried and processed goods stored in the kitchen, including pet food
