CLOTHING MOTHS
Clothes moths are pests that can destroy fabric and other materials. They feed exclusively on animal fibers, especially wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and leather. These materials contain keratin, a fibrous protein that the worm-like larvae of the clothes moth can digest.
CLOTHING MOTH IDENTIFICATION
Two different types of clothes moths which are common in North America — the webbing clothes moth and the casemaking clothes moth. Clothes moths are small, 1/2-inch moths that are beige or buff-colored. They have narrow wings that are fringed with small hairs. The larval stage of clothes moths are creamy-white caterpillars up to 1/2-inch long.
WEBBING CLOTHING MOTH
The webbing clothes moth is the most common fabric moth. The adult is gold with reddish-golden hairs on the top of its head. A row of golden hairs fringes its wings, which have a span of about 1/2 inch. Larvae are a shiny, creamy white with a brown head, up to 1/2-inch long. The larvae spin long threads and construct tunnels of silk.
CASEMAKING CLOTHING MOTH
Casemaking clothes moths have dark specks on their wings. Female moths lay eggs, singly or in small clusters, that hatch into tiny caterpillars within 4 to 10 days. Larvae develop through several stages (the casemaking clothes moth develops through 5 to 45 instars) until they reach almost ½ inch long. Larvae of the casemaking clothes moth always carry a silken case with them as they feed. They never leave this silken case behind but enlarge it as they grow. The life cycle from egg to adult may be completed within 2 months but may take several years.
CLOTHING MOTH CONTROL
Placing a few pheromone traps throughout your home or business would not completely eliminate the problem. There can be more to your clothing moth infestation. There are several control methods (insecticides, heat, fumigation, low temperature/freezing, steam, and vacuuming) which can be used. Its always recommended to use a combination of control methods.
